SEALCOATING & CRACKSEALING

Sealcoating and crack sealing fall into the category of pavement preservation and are generally considered a pro-active maintenance strategy. Crack sealing is the most important strategy owners and managers should use to extend the life of their pavement and minimize future removal/replacement. Sealcoating and striping protect the pavement against oxidation and chemical spills, enhance the aesthetics as well as assist the users with proper pavement markings and signs.

Many clients are not aware that routing cracks can extend the life of the crack repair by up to 300% prior to re-application. Routing is a process where the joint or crack is ground out and grooved to create a ½” – ¾” wide channel for the crack sealant to sit and bond to both edges of the pavement. Conventional non-routed crack sealing relies on the material being “forced” into the void of the crack, but that crack is non-uniform and, in some cases, not wide enough to properly seal or fill. PLM recommends routing for all new cracks in pavement.

Asphalt Emulsion Sealcoat (AE) is generally considered more environmentally friendly and is the preferred material for installation in most markets of SE Wisconsin. Many municipalities have prohibited the installation of Coal Tar Emulsion (CTE). Asphalt emulsions tend to be less durable, softer materials and have an expected lifespan of 1-2 years prior to re-application.

Coal Tar Emulsion (CTE) is the historical product of choice combining greater wearing properties and longevity. Coal Tar emulsions are more durable, have more additives and solids and have an expected lifespan of 2-3 years prior to re-application.
