Commercial paving: 5 questions to ask when hiring a company.

Published
May 6, 2020

The paving and concrete industry is saturated with companies of all sizes and tenures, so when you’re hiring for a big commercial job, there are a few things you’ll want to look out for before making hiring decisions.

How long has your company been around?

Newbie companies can be great, but they can also lack the experience and workforce needed to take on big commercial jobs. Building a successful and effective paving and concrete company requires time--years of building up a collection of the right equipment, establishing a reliable workforce, and formulating protocols and routines for jobs of all types. Rookie companies may lack the expertise, equipment, and experience to take on larger jobs.

The tenure of a paving company can tell you a lot about how trustworthy they are. An untrustworthy company concerned only with making money rather than serving their community and customers is much less likely to last than a company rooted in integrity and excellence; negative reviews and lack of returning customers can quickly bury a company that operates without integrity, so if a company has been around a while, it’s likely that they’re doing right by their customers.

What types of technical services do you offer?

Finding a company where you can get everything you need for commercial maintenance in one place is rare and valuable! Some companies only handle certain aspects of what is needed to complete a job--only handing asphalt work, but not concrete for sidewalks, for example. If you can get everything you need for a job from one company, it will save you valuable time and money.

Every hour your parking lot is held up for a paving job is an hour your employees are out of office and customers are kept away, so you’re not just paying for the paving job, but for the impediment of business operations. PLM offers everything you will need to complete a job quickly and efficiently--even snow removal--limiting the interruption to your business as much as possible.

Paving and concrete work is a scientific art; it requires precision, knowledge, and assistance from advanced technology to be done correctly. When taking on a job, workers must understand grading, subsoil fabrics, and regional weather patterns--among so many other conditions--to design a quality product that will stand the test of time.

Parking lots and driveways take a beating over time; they must be designed to work with their environment in terms of weather, water flow, and the immense amounts of pressure they carry every day, or they will quickly deteriorate and break down, resulting in costly repairs for you.

During the hiring process, ask companies what kinds of technical engineering they use during the paving process to ensure the longevity of their product. Mostly, you want to get a feel for how much knowledge they have in their industry, and therefore how qualified they are to get excellent results on your project.

Do you have testimonials from past commercial jobs?

Testimonials from commercial customers are extremely valuable when vetting a company for a commercial job. Just about any paving company can handle a residential driveway, but large parking lots, complex pathways--commercial jobs in general--require a level of expertise, experience, and equipment that often isn’t required for residential jobs.

Look on their website for examples of their previous work; ask your sales representative if they have commercial testimonials they can show you; if you really want to go above and beyond, go check out some of their previous work for yourself.

Is your company licensed and insured?

This is a basic requirement for hiring for a commercial job--or really any paving job. It is extremely unlikely that you will find a quality, qualified paving company that isn’t even licensed or insured.

What’s your company’s story?

The best paving companies have a rich history and story that they’re proud of. It means that they have a set of principles and values that they hold themselves to in every job, in every interaction with clients, and in how they treat and compensate their employees. Companies like this are accountable and operate with a level of integrity and professionalism that you won’t get from an average paving company. They have a reputation to uphold, and it will shine through in all your interactions with them and in the quality of their finished product.

At PLM, we are proud of our history, and we are dedicated to integrity, quality, and excellence. We care about the customer experience and designing a quality product that will stand the test of time. Call us today to get a quote for your job!
